Thousands Of Dolphins Flee California Coast: Mega Pod Stampede!

A huge dolphin pod 'stampede' was captured on camera on Thursday as amazed onlookers in a passing boat caught a glimpse of the Fin-tastic phenomenon.

The shots of the massive cluster of surfacing dolphins was filmed from the Dana Pride, a boat for whale and dolphin watching, operated by Dana Point Whale Watch in southern California.

The mega-pod of dolphins is thought to number close to 2,000, far greater than the average pod of around 12 dolphins. But what was the cause?

Britain's lambs being wiped out by killer virus from Europe amid fears disease could spread to humans

A virus which causes lambs to be born dead or with serious deformities is sweeping farms.
The Schmallenberg virus, which also affects cattle, has already struck 74 farms in southern and eastern England, killing thousands of animals.
Some farmers have reported losing 20 per cent of their lambs since it arrived in the country last month from Europe, where 1,000 farms are affected.

Lambs with the virus are either stillborn or have horrific deformities such as fused limbs, misshapen heads and twisted necks which mean they cannot survive.
Scientists are urgently trying to find out how the disease spreads to prevent it blighting Britain’s livestock like the 2001 foot and mouth outbreak which resulted in millions of animals being slaughtered.
The Food Standards Agency insists the risk to humans is low, and those who have been exposed to the virus have not experienced any adverse effects.
But the National Farmers’ Union has called the outbreak a ‘potential catastrophe’ for the industry which is already suffering from the economic downturn.
Named after the small German town where it was first spotted last summer, the disease is thought to have been brought to Britain by midges.

Ewes show no sign of illness until they give birth, by which time it is too late to save their young. As the lambing season has only just begun, the full impact of the tragedy is likely to be felt in the coming weeks.
Farmers have described the heartbreak of having to shoot lambs born deformed and unable to suckle to save them from a slow death. One farmer said he had put down more lambs than at any point in the past 20 years. Others described it as ‘soul-destroying’.
Alistair Mackintosh of the NFU said: ‘For any business to lose 20 per cent of your stock would be a huge blow. For a farmer it is catastrophic. If it was 50 per cent you would be put out of action.
‘I know one farmer who says 10 per cent of his 6,000 ewes have become barren, so that is 600 animals producing nothing.’
In Germany and Holland the virus was detected in adult cattle, causing symptoms including reduced milk yield. In Britain the calving season has not yet begun, so the impact on foetuses is not yet clear.
The counties worst affected so far are Norfolk, Suffolk, East Sussex and Kent but the virus has already spread along the south coast to Cornwall and parts of south Wales.
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has not ruled out direct transmission between animals but said a ban on imports would be pointless as the disease is already here.
In 2007 millions of sheep and goats on British farms were killed as a result of bluetongue virus, which was also brought in by midges.
It has now been eradicated but farmers are concerned that a vaccine for Schmallenberg does not exist and could take 18 months to two years to develop.

Putin assassination plot foiled: Russian state media

Ukrainian security services have confirmed they have thwarted a plot to kill Russian PM Vladimir Putin, Russian news agency Ria Novosti says.

Two suspects were detained in the Ukrainian port of Odessa, Russia's state-owned Channel One TV reports.
The arrested men were both shown on TV admitting their involvement in the plot, after an explosion at a flat in January in which one suspect died.
The attack was to happen after next Sunday's presidential vote.
Mr Putin is expected to win the election and get a third term as president.
The BBC's Daniel Sandford in Moscow said the two men were both shown on Russian TV, one being interrogated and the other giving an interview.
In the footage, both admit plotting to attack Mr Putin. One, identified by Ria Novosti as Ilya Pyanzin, said he had been hired by Chechen militant leader Doku Umarov to carry out the killing and also by Ruslan Madayev, the suspect who died in the Odessa explosion.
The other suspect was named by Channel One as Adam Osmayev, said to have been on an international wanted list since 2007.
The plotters were planning to plant mines on Kutuzovsky Avenue in Moscow, used by Mr Putin on a daily basis, the report said.
The Russian prime minister's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed the report, without making any further comment.
Russian media report that Mr Pyanzin was arrested in the Odessa flat where the explosion happened. He told police that he and Madayev had flown to Ukraine from the United Arab Emirates via Turkey, with precise instructions from representatives of Doku Umarov.
According to the reports, details of the plot were found on laptops in the flat, along with a video showing Mr Putin's motorcade.
Mr Osmayev was reported to be the local fixer in Odessa and the instructor for the plotters, and had lived for a long time in London.

An unsettling report prepared by Viktor Seleznyov, director of the Geophysical Institute at the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS), on the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Tyva Republic in Russia’s East Siberia earlier today warns that more seismic activity should be expected within the coming weeks and that this event is part of an ever increasing body of evidence pointing to a “rapid” shifting in our Earth’s magnetic poles.

Director Seleznyov, and other SB RAS scientists, have been increasingly concerned over the past fortnight about this region after the 9 February and 12 February “mysterious blasts” in the Kemerovo Region reminiscent of the 30 June 1908 Tunguska Event that remains the largest explosion of its type in modern times that for over a century has yet to be fully explained.

The “common linkage” between these mysterious explosions and increasing seismic events in Siberia, this report says, is due to the rapid shifting of our Earth’s magnetic North Pole that has doubled in the last 50 years, and in the 1990s “picked up speed in a big way,” bolting north–northwest into the Arctic Ocean at more than 55 kilometers per year.

To the most immediate effect upon our Earth due to this “magnetic pole anomaly,” this report continues, has been the “strange disruption” of the jet stream over the Northern Hemisphere that on the North American side has produced the driest and warmest winter weather in recorded history, but on the European side has caused record-setting cold and snow that has claimed over 650 lives.

Though Director Seleznyov notes in this report that the evidence for a “full scale” geomagnetic reversal of the positions of magnetic north and magnetic south are still being debated, our Earth is, “without a doubt,” currently undergoing a Laschamp-type geomagnetic “event” known as a geomagnetic excursion.

A geomagnetic excursion, like a geomagnetic reversal, is a significant change in the Earth's magnetic field. Unlike reversals however, an excursion does not permanently change the large-scale orientation of the field, but rather represents a dramatic, typically short-lived decrease in field intensity, with a variation in pole orientation of up to 45 degrees from the previous position.

The Laschamp Geomagnetic “Event” noted in this report is interesting on a number of levels due to its having occurred between 7,000-17,000 years ago falling within the working timeframe of: 1.) The flash freezing of Siberia where still today woolly mammoths are still uncovered in near pristine condition, and 2.) The 11 August 3114 BCE start date of the Mayan Calendar that seemingly predicts the year of 2012 will, indeed, experience another such cataclysmic event.

Important to note is that in our 7 January 2011 report “Pole Shift Blamed For Russian Air Disaster, Closure Of US Airport” we had stated the growing concerns of Russian, EU and US officials due to the rapid shifting of our Earth’s magnetic poles that had led the Kremlin to order an additional 5,000 survival shelters built in Moscow alone, and the Europeans to construct what is called the “Doomsday Seed Vault.”

Most curious to note in all of these events, especially after 2011 experienced a record cost of $265 billion in natural disasters (a record set just the previous year, 2010, that cost $218 billion), are that the Western nations, most notably the United States, continues to coax their populations into complacency regarding the unprecedented events now occurring, and showing every likelihood to get worse.

To how abhorrent US officials are to their citizens preparing for natural disasters, or other type emergencies, their propaganda media organs this past month launched a series of news reports, magazine articles and television programmes depicting these people as “Doomsday Preppers” who are mentally ill, at best, or deranged, at worst.

This depiction by the US of people who prepare for the worst of times as “crackpots” stands in sharp contrast to the entirety of human civilization where it was a valued practice to store up food and supplies in preparation for any eventuality. And to the “eventuality” one should, indeed, prepare for, as noted in Director Seleznyov’s report, is the growing global chaos that could very well ensue should his predictions prove accurate.

To the validity of Director Seleznyov’s predictions, should they come horrifyingly true this year, one need look no further than the letter conversations held between arguable two of the greatest minds of the 20th century; Albert Einstein (1879-1955) the German-born theoretical physicist who developed the theory of general relativity, and Immanuel Velikovsky (1895-1975) the Russian-born American independent scholar of Jewish origins.

Where on one hand Einstein represented the modern scientific community regarding the possibility of “sudden” Earth changes, Velikovsky gave voice to the all of the ancient peoples who ever lived on this Earth who stated they witnessed these “sudden” Earth changes first hand, with the “battle” between them resting on what was going to be the “final outcome” and, perhaps, best articulated by Einstein in his 22 May 1954 letter to Velikovsky that, in part, said:

“The proof of “sudden” changes is quite convincing and meritorious. If you had done nothing else but to gather and present in a clear way this mass of evidence, you would have already a considerable merit.”

Though Einstein died before he and Velikovsky were able to complete their “debate,” critical assumptions made by Einstein in backing his position were subsequently proved to be false, and as Velikovsky completely documented in his manuscript “Before The Day Breaks”.

To us living today, and as detailed in Director Seleznyov’s report, of whom to believe…Einstein or Velikovsky…will determine the fate billions…and if the ancients are to be believed, the “end” will come much, much sooner than later.

The USGS's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory recorded over 60 earthquakes (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Maps/special/Hawaii_eqs.php) strong enough to be located beneath Kilauea, over a dozen of which were greater than a magnitude 2.0; the largest was a magnitude 3.2 earthquake.

"We are still seeing increased rates of seismisity in that area. We just had a magnitude 2.4 come through during the course of this call," Thelen said.

Previous earthquake "swarms" have occurred at this same spot near the boundary between Mauna Loa and Kilauea Volcanos in 1990, 1993, 1997 and 2006.

The USGS received about ten reports from residents who felt Wednesday's swarm.

"I was at home on my computer at about 8:40 and coincidentally I was blogging about the earthquakes that were happening throughout that time, all of a sudden a loud boom and a half-second later, my house shook," said Pahoa resident Damon Tucker.

Damon Tucker was about 30 miles away in Pahoa. However, he's never heard an explosion before an earthquake. He was told Hawaii County Civil Defense said the "boom" cannot be explained."

"PAULSBORO, N.J. - February 24, 2012 (WPVI) -- A massive oil spill at the closed Paulsboro Refinery in South Jersey is sending sickening fumes over the region. One of the hardest hit areas is in Delaware County, where school children are inhaling the smell.

The spill happened around 1:00 p.m. Thursday at PBF Energy's Paulsboro refinery at 800 Billingsport Road.

At several schools in the Chichester School District, children were reporting feeling ill from breathing the fumes. The school district says no one has been sent home sick because of the fumes, but they have kept the children indoors as a precaution and an early dismal was called for some schools."

More than 100 police officers, some in riot gear, broke up a Florida crowd after shoppers waiting for new Nike shoe rushed towards the store.

Authorities say there were no injuries or arrests, but the midnight shoe release was cancelled.
In the state of Maryland, one person was arrested for disorderly conduct as a crowd waited outside a Nike outlet.
The $220 (£139) limited-edition shoe was released on the eve of the NBA All-Star basketball in Orlando, Florida.
Helicopter spotlight As crowds gathered on Thursday night, officials from the Florida Sheriff's Office, the Orlando Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol told them to wait in a car park opposite the shop.
Eventually one person ran towards the Foot Locker store, prompting others to follow, the Orlando Sentinel newspaper reported.
Police used shields to push back the crowd and more officers arrived with riot gear, some on motorcycles or on horseback. A helicopter with a spotlight was also called in.
The disturbance is not the first time a high-profile retail event has ended in unrest.
There were multiple disturbances across the US in December as shoppers lined up for a new version of the Nike Air Jordan shoe.
On Black Friday, the day after the US holiday of Thanksgiving, the start of the US holiday shopping season was marred by shootings and pepper-sprayings as bargain-hunters stampeded stores.

US: Mystery Grows As More Livestock Dies In Maury County

Tennessee -- Horses are dying and now cattle as well and detectives in Maury County have been at a loss to explain how or why it is happening. First, seven seemingly healthy horses turned up dead last week at a Hampshire farm in Maury County. The state performed a necropsy and released the results.
"They ruled that it's undetermined. The cause of death cannot be determined at this time. It is a mystery. We don't know what happened," said Detective Terry Chandler with the Maury County Sheriff's Department.
Now Detective Chandler is investigating more deaths: Two dead cows at a farm across from the one where the seven horses were found. And he's consulting with police looking into more mysterious horse deaths in Dickson and Giles county.
Chandler said there is no evidence anyone is intentionally harming the animals.
He said they have not ruled out the possibility the livestock died from eating contaminated hay or a poison plant. It's possible the toxins were not detected by the state testing.

$15 TRILLION is equivalent to the the federal debt of the U.S. Treasury Department. Lord James of Blackheath has spoken in the House of Lords holding evidence of three transactions of 5 Trillion each and a transaction of 750,000 metric tonnes of gold and has called for an investigation.

I think there are three possible conclusions that may come from it. I think there may have been a massive piece of money laundering committed by a major government which ought to know better and that it has effectively undermined the integrity of the British bank the Royal Bank of Scotland, in doing so. The second alternative is that a major American department has an agency that has gone rogue on it because it has been wound up and has created a structure out of which they are seeking to get at least 50 billion Euros as a payoff. And the third possibility is that this is an extraordinarily elaborate fraud which has not been carried out but which has been prepared in order to provide a threat to one government or more if they don't pay them off. So there are three possibilities and this all needs a very urgent review.

My Lords, it starts in April and May of 2009, with the alleged transfer to the United Kingdom, to HSBC of a sum of 5 trillion dollars and seven days later, in comes another 5 trillion dollars to HSBC, and then 3 weeks later another 5 trillion. 5 trillion in each case. Sorry. A total of 15 trillion dollars is alleged to have been passed into the hands of HSBC for onward transit to the Royal Bank of Scotland and we need to look at where this came from and what the history of this money is. And I have been trying to sort out the sequence by which this money has been created and from where it has come from for a long time.

"A strange breed of fireball is streaking through the skies this month, and NASA is urging folks on the ground to take notice.
February's fireballs — a term that describes meteors that appear brighter in the sky than Venus — aren't more numerous than normal, but their appearance and trajectory are odd, experts say.
"These fireballs are particularly slow and penetrating," meteor expert Peter Brown, a physics professor at the University of Western Ontario, said in a statement. "They hit the top of the atmosphere moving slower than 15 kilometers per second (33,500 mph), decelerate rapidly and make it to within 50 kilometers (31 miles) of Earth's surface."
Beginning February with a bang
The month's fireball action began on Feb. 1, when a meteor lit up the skies over central Texas, putting on a dazzling show for people in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
"It was brighter and long-lasting than anything I've seen before," said witness Daryn Morran. "The fireball took about eight seconds to cross the sky. I could see the fireball start to slow down; then it exploded like a firecracker artillery shell into several pieces, flickered a few more times and then slowly burned out."
The fireball was about as bright as the full moon, and was spotted by NASA cameras in New Mexico, more than 500 miles (805 km) away. It was likely caused by an object 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters) wide, NASA researchers said.
And the meteors have kept coming, well into February."

There is just a week to go until Google controversially changes its privacy policy to allow it to gather, store and use personal information about its users.
But there is one way to stymie the web giant's attempts to build a permanent profile of you that could include personal information including age, gender, locality and even sexuality.
From March 1, you won't be able to opt out of the new policy, which has been criticised by privacy campaigners who have filed a complaint to U.S. regulators.
But before that date you can delete your browsing history and, which will limit the extent to which Google records your every move - including your embarrasing secrets. Here's how:

1. Go to the Google homepage and sign into your account. Use the dropdown menu under your name in the upper right-hand corner to access your settings. Click on 'account settings', like below.

Technology site Gizmodo said that the change was the end of Google’s ‘don’t be evil motto.
The site’s Mat Honan wrote: ‘It means that things you could do in relative anonymity today, will be explicitly associated with your name, your face, your phone number.
'If you use Google's services, you have to agree to this new privacy policy. It is an explicit reversal of its previous policies.’
Larry Dignan, meanwhile, writing on ZDnet.com, described the new policy as ‘Big Brother-ish’.

The myth of the eight-hour sleep

We often worry about lying awake in the middle of the night - but it could be good for you. A growing body of evidence from both science and history suggests that the eight-hour sleep may be unnatural.

In the early 1990s, psychiatrist Thomas Wehr conducted an experiment in which a group of people were plunged into darkness for 14 hours every day for a month.
It took some time for their sleep to regulate but by the fourth week the subjects settled into a very distinct sleeping pattern. They slept first for four hours, then woke for one or two hours before falling into a second four-hour sleep.
Though sleep scientists were impressed by the study, among the general public the idea that we must sleep for eight consecutive hours persists.
In 2001, historian Roger Ekirch of Virginia Tech published a seminal paper, drawn from 16 years of research, revealing a wealth of historical evidence that humans used to sleep in two distinct chunks.
His book At Day's Close: Night in Times Past, published four years later, unearths more than 500 references to a segmented sleeping pattern - in diaries, court records, medical books and literature, from Homer's Odyssey to an anthropological account of modern tribes in Nigeria.

Much like the experience of Wehr's subjects, these references describe a first sleep which began about two hours after dusk, followed by waking period of one or two hours and then a second sleep.
"It's not just the number of references - it is the way they refer to it, as if it was common knowledge," Ekirch says.
During this waking period people were quite active. They often got up, went to the toilet or smoked tobacco and some even visited neighbours. Most people stayed in bed, read, wrote and often prayed. Countless prayer manuals from the late 15th Century offered special prayers for the hours in between sleeps.
And these hours weren't entirely solitary - people often chatted to bed-fellows or had sex.
A doctor's manual from 16th Century France even advised couples that the best time to conceive was not at the end of a long day's labour but "after the first sleep", when "they have more enjoyment" and "do it better".
Ekirch found that references to the first and second sleep started to disappear during the late 17th Century. This started among the urban upper classes in northern Europe and over the course of the next 200 years filtered down to the rest of Western society.
By the 1920s the idea of a first and second sleep had receded entirely from our social consciousness.

He attributes the initial shift to improvements in street lighting, domestic lighting and a surge in coffee houses - which were sometimes open all night. As the night became a place for legitimate activity and as that activity increased, the length of time people could dedicate to rest dwindled.

In his new book, Evening's Empire, historian Craig Koslofsky puts forward an account of how this happened.
"Associations with night before the 17th Century were not good," he says. The night was a place populated by people of disrepute - criminals, prostitutes and drunks.
"Even the wealthy, who could afford candlelight, had better things to spend their money on. There was no prestige or social value associated with staying up all night."
That changed in the wake of the Reformation and the counter-Reformation. Protestants and Catholics became accustomed to holding secret services at night, during periods of persecution. If earlier the night had belonged to reprobates, now respectable people became accustomed to exploiting the hours of darkness.
This trend migrated to the social sphere too, but only for those who could afford to live by candlelight. With the advent of street lighting, however, socialising at night began to filter down through the classes.
In 1667, Paris became the first city in the world to light its streets, using wax candles in glass lamps. It was followed by Lille in the same year and Amsterdam two years later, where a much more efficient oil-powered lamp was developed.
London didn't join their ranks until 1684 but by the end of the century, more than 50 of Europe's major towns and cities were lit at night.
Night became fashionable and spending hours lying in bed was considered a waste of time.

A small city like Leipzig in central Germany employed 100 men to tend to 700 lamps

"People were becoming increasingly time-conscious and sensitive to efficiency, certainly before the 19th Century," says Roger Ekirch. "But the industrial revolution intensified that attitude by leaps and bounds."
Strong evidence of this shifting attitude is contained in a medical journal from 1829 which urged parents to force their children out of a pattern of first and second sleep.
"If no disease or accident there intervene, they will need no further repose than that obtained in their first sleep, which custom will have caused to terminate by itself just at the usual hour.
"And then, if they turn upon their ear to take a second nap, they will be taught to look upon it as an intemperance not at all redounding to their credit."
Today, most people seem to have adapted quite well to the eight-hour sleep, but Ekirch believes many sleeping problems may have roots in the human body's natural preference for segmented sleep as well as the ubiquity of artificial light.
This could be the root of a condition called sleep maintenance insomnia, where people wake during the night and have trouble getting back to sleep, he suggests.
The condition first appears in literature at the end of the 19th Century, at the same time as accounts of segmented sleep disappear.
"For most of evolution we slept a certain way," says sleep psychologist Gregg Jacobs. "Waking up during the night is part of normal human physiology."
The idea that we must sleep in a consolidated block could be damaging, he says, if it makes people who wake up at night anxious, as this anxiety can itself prohibit sleeps and is likely to seep into waking life too.

Stages of sleep

Every 60-100 minutes we go through a cycle of four stages of sleep

Stage 1 is a drowsy, relaxed state between being awake and sleeping - breathing slows, muscles relax, heart rate drops
Stage 2 is slightly deeper sleep - you may feel awake and this means that, on many nights, you may be asleep and not know it
Stage 3 and Stage 4, or Deep Sleep - it is very hard to wake up from Deep Sleep because this is when there is the lowest amount of activity in your body
After Deep Sleep, we go back to Stage 2 for a few minutes, and then enter Dream Sleep - also called REM (rapid eye movement) sleep - which, as its name suggests, is when you dream

Russell Foster, a professor of circadian [body clock] neuroscience at Oxford, shares this point of view.

"Many people wake up at night and panic," he says. "I tell them that what they are experiencing is a throwback to the bi-modal sleep pattern."
But the majority of doctors still fail to acknowledge that a consolidated eight-hour sleep may be unnatural.
"Over 30% of the medical problems that doctors are faced with stem directly or indirectly from sleep. But sleep has been ignored in medical training and there are very few centres where sleep is studied," he says.
Jacobs suggests that the waking period between sleeps, when people were forced into periods of rest and relaxation, could have played an important part in the human capacity to regulate stress naturally.
In many historic accounts, Ekirch found that people used the time to meditate on their dreams.
"Today we spend less time doing those things," says Dr Jacobs. "It's not a coincidence that, in modern life, the number of people who report anxiety, stress, depression, alcoholism and drug abuse has gone up."
So the next time you wake up in the middle of the night, think of your pre-industrial ancestors and relax. Lying awake could be good for you.

The story goes that aliens in a flying saucer inexplicably crashed in Roswell with badly injured aliens on board.
At the time spokesmen from the nearby Army air base said that a 'flying disc' was found, but just hours later retracted the statement insisting instead that it was a weather balloon.
The incident was barely reported until the 1970s when a series of books and documentaries revived conspiracy theories that an alien landing had taken place.

However, all may not be as it seems, with many online conspiracy theorists claiming the landing is nothing more than an elaborate hoax.
The video was uploaded to YouTube by Stephen Hannard of Alien Disclosure Group UK.
He commented: 'Possible leaked footage of a UFO arriving then landing at an unknown location in New Mexico.
'Could be one of ours, CGI, or could be the real deal. As always you decide.'

The chief complaint from YouTube users unconvinced by the footage is that the terrain the UFO is hovering over looks distinctly like northern Europe, and nothing like the parched deserts of New Mexico.
The vehicles glimpsed in the footage also appear to be small European cars and lorries, as opposed to their larger American equivalents.
One viewer, 3492crusherdestroyer, writes: 'Can tell this is in the UK, British road signs on the road, European models of cars and trucks in the car park.
'So it's fake but it's well done and still cool.'

He also claims NASA has deliberately bombed important areas of the Moon in an effort to destroy ancient artefacts and facility's.

Pictures yet to be released clearly show nuclear impact craters and building debris caused by explosions in an effort by NASA to destroy the truth. China is moving toward full disclosure of the Extraterrestrial reality, if these images and future ones are verified genuine then NASA should be investigated for fraud and treason. China will be releasing all the data and images from the Chang'e-2 in the coming weeks and months, lets hope this is the beginning of a new era.

Dozens of inmates killed in gang fight in Mexican jail

At least 44 people have died in a prison fight in northern Mexico.

Security officials said members of rival drug cartels confronted each other with stones and home-made weapons in the jail north of the city of Monterrey.
Some victims were strangled.
An investigation is under way to establish if some of the prison guards colluded in the fight by unlocking the doors separating two wings of the prison.
Deadly fights between rival gangs are not uncommon in Mexico's notoriously overcrowded and corrupt prison system.
Nuevo Leon state security spokesman Jorge Domene said the fight was sparked by the bitter rivalry between the Gulf cartel and the Zetas drug gang.
The two groups are fighting a brutal war for control of the drug smuggling routes to the United States.
That violent rivalry is mirrored in the region's prisons, where rival gang members live cheek-by-jowl.
Anxious wait

Anxious relatives gathered outside Apodaca prison, north of the city of Monterrey

"We've confirmed 44 dead, all from the prison's "D" wing, Prison Director Gilberto Cesena said.
The number of those injured in the fight, which started at 02:00 local time, has not yet been given.
Mr Cesena said the security forces were now in control of the situation.
Relatives of the prisoners have gathered outside the jail to find out news about who has been killed and injured.
Mr Domene asked them to be patient.
"We have more than 3,000 inmates in this penitentiary and we have to account for all of them first," he said.
The prison was built to hold around 1,500 inmates. Mexican jails are notorious for overcrowding, corruption and rioting.
In January, 31 inmates were killed at a prison in Altamira, in Tamaulipas state, when rival gangs confronted each other with homemade weapons and knives.

Around the world the stage is being set for its collapse, which is almost upon us. But just as mankind has responded to God’s warnings for the past 6,000 years, this final age of man’s self-rule has proven to be the same. God has been ignored, and mankind has once again gone about seeking to remedy his own problems his own ways, but this time is man’s last time to respond to God in arrogance and pride. In this final time, God is allowing mankind to temporarily experience a false sense of hope and belief that he can solve his own problems and that life will once again “get back on track.” Not so this time!
The hype in the stock market and false confidence in the power of the U.S. dollar is the epitome of man’s pride. This period of pride is marked by a willing blindness of the truth. The signs of what is coming are being ignored. It is as Jesus Christ said at his first coming:
The Pharisees along with the Sadducees came seeking proof and asked of him [seeking proof that he was whom it was being claimed] that he would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said to them, “When it is evening and the sky is red, you say that it will be fair weather. And in the morning it will be foul weather today when the sky is red and gloomy. Oh hypocrites, for you can discern the face of the sky, but you will not discern [refuse to discern or judge] the signs of the times” (Matthew 16:1-3).
Willing Ignorance and a Blind Eye:
Although we (Church of God – PKG) hold fast to the conviction that Jesus Christ is returning as King of kings on May 27th of this year, it is understood that others fully disbelieve that such is possible in only a short time. Even if we were wrong, the “signs” are all around that this world is changing rapidly for the worse, shifting quickly before our very eyes, and that very troublous times are right in front of us. Ignoring the “signs” will not make such trouble go away. The false euphoria of choosing to believe that life is improving will only be a temporary experience and will only produce a far greater traumatic crash at the end.
Such exaggerated wishful thinking will only lead to a more painful reality once a complete global implosion strikes. The United States has already gone the way of Great Britain after WWII, but it will not address such a truth. Yes, the final prophesied collapse is at the door. At one time it was years away, then months, and now only weeks away.
Great effort is being exerted to ignore reality and to instead trust in a false belief about the true economic condition of the United States. Such false hope is about to be dashed to pieces. The truth is so plain, but willing blindness and pride is so great that simplicity cannot be heard. The dollar is rapidly going the way of ancient Rome, yet the denarius and aurous were at least made of silver and gold. The world reserve currency is shifting rapidly. China and Russia have begun to drop the dollar in bilateral trade. Even China (world’s second largest economy) and Japan (world’s third largest economy) have entered into agreements to bypass the dollar and engage in direct currency trade. China and Iran have now agreed to bypass the dollar and barter in oil. India and Japan have agreed to begin swapping in their own currencies. It is reported that Iran and Russia are replacing the dollar with the rial and ruble in trade. Then last week, it was reported that Iran and India have agreed to settle their annual oil trade in rupees.
It was stated rather poignantly by one American financial reporting agency about these trends: “But yes… the dollar still is the reserve currency… if only in which to make calculations of how many imaginary money one pays in exchange for imaginary ‘developed world’ collateral.”
The petrodollar bears its name for great reason and today its continued power and existence is being threatened on the world scene. Is it possibly true that some would like to see an escalation in tension with Iran that would actually trigger a war? It is this region of the world that prophecies concerning the king of the south and the king of the north become instrumental in bringing the world together in a third world war. That war is now very near! And who are the great players on the board that bring this to a final conflict? Who should you be watching? As she sleeps, the U.S. is about to lose its place as a major player, and Europe, Iran, China, Russia, and Israel will step in as the major players.
Europe Is Rising:
The European Union is being pushed to the edge, and as a result, it is about to make a great shift in its direction and emerge in a new form. The 7th revival of the Holy Roman Empire is about to come on the world scene. After it has come together for a time, it will not be long before the Fifth Trumpet of Revelation sounds and great devastation follows.
For over sixty years, God’s Church has been warning the world about this final power that will come upon the world in the form of ten unified nations in Europe. The stage is being set and it is getting close to the time for the curtain to be raised. Just today, a headline from the EU Observer (EUobserver.com) reads: “Nine EU countries form splinter group on financial tax.” It states, “A group of nine euro-countries led by France and Germany on Tuesday asked the Danish EU presidency to fast-track plans for a financial transactions tax – a move indicating they will forge ahead on their own in the absence of an EU-wide consensus.”
The final ten that emerge may be somewhat different and include other countries, or it may include these same nine countries. If it is these nine, there will already be ten, as the Vatican is considered a country, and it is most definitely part of this final resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire. How close do you think it might be? How quickly can it come on the world scene? This may be it!
Some Europeans and especially Germans do not respond well when pushed to the brink. Those who have the greatest stake in the euro are rapidly pushing for big change in order to survive. Their troubles are spiraling out of control as reports continue to flood in concerning the dire conditions that only mount with intensity.
Spain’s finance minister admitted last week that their unemployment rate has now jumped to 24 percent. Another report today states that the German debt-collecting group, Creditreform, has noted that 175,000 businesses went bust in western Europe last year, threatening 1.5 million jobs. The number is up 7% on 2010, but individual countries, such as Greece (27%), Spain (19%), Italy (17%) and Portugal (17%), saw a steeper increase due to the crisis.

There is no other word to better describe the West’s attitude toward Iran than that of “stupidity.” To ignore or minimize the determination, belief, and capability of Iranian leaders, both governmental and religious, is one of the greatest acts of foolishness that any world leader can make. The motivation of Iranian leaders is far different from most who have ruled throughout the Islamic countries of the Middle East. Leaders like Hosni Mubarak or current military leaders of Egypt, Saddam Hussein or Nuri al-Maliki of Iraq, Bashar al-Assad of Syria, King Abdullah II of Jordan, the former Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, Recep Erdogan of Turkey, and the many others that we could name, all have or have had vastly different motivations in leadership from that of Iran’s.
The primary motivation and zealous focus of Iranian leaders is squarely based upon their fervent Islamic Shiite belief in the coming of the prophesied 12th Imam Mahdi who will usher in Armageddon. Their belief is that the destruction of Israel will trigger “the coming” of the last Islamic Messiah. They believe that they are the ones who will fulfill Allah’s will to aid and help in the fulfillment of these end-time events.
Rather than explaining about continuing escalation of tensions in this region and the depth of their religious convictions that fuel these tensions, I am going to recommend another video that helps to explain their beliefs from their own perspective. This will help readers to better grasp the true seriousness behind the rhetoric of these leaders and why such rhetoric should not be dismissed so flippantly as so many are doing.

Patients' lives will be at risk during Olympics as ambulances are 'banned' from using fast lane reserved for VIPs

Ambulances carrying the sick and vulnerable will be left stranded in traffic jams during the Olympics while dignitaries beat congestion with 'Games lanes' reserved for VIPs.
Organisers for the London Games rejected a request from NHS London to let ambulances use the new fast lanes and have now been accused of risking patients' lives.
The lanes, which will be implemented across 39 miles of road in central London, will allow 80,000 accredited members of the ‘Olympic family’, including athletes, officials and sponsors to by-pass congestion on the busy roads.
Meanwhile ambulances will only be allowed in the lanes if they have their blue lights on.
Blue lights can only be switched on by those specifically trained to do so and are only used in genuine emergencies and Leah Bevington, head of communications at Medical Services said this was totally unacceptable.
Speaking to The Observer she said 'This means that sick people, often elderly and frail, urgent blood supplies and oxygen will all be made to wait in traffic with the rest of us.

'Congestion can be bad enough around London on a regular day so you can imagine that we are concerned that patients will be on a vehicle for much longer periods of time.
'As much as the NHS and everyone else is trying to run business as usual, without some help it won't happen.'

The £25m Olympic Route Network (ORN) will be operational for 17 days of the event, covering the fortnight-long competitive period and a number of days before and after.

Last week undercover investigations by Channel 4's Dispatches revealed that rich businessmen were being offered the chance to ‘buy’ access to the VIP road lanes for £20,000 a head.
Companies including High Street travel chain Thomas Cook stand accused of violating Olympic rules by secretly including use of the fast-track routes in corporate packages.
Reporters were offered a Thomas Cook package priced at £450,709 for a group of 23.
The week-long deal included tickets for the men’s 100 metres athletics finals, six nights at the five-star Athenaeum hotel in Mayfair – and access to the lanes.
In the programme, shown last week, Pete Moore, who described himself as the company’s Head of Olympic Trip Packages, says corporate purchasers could use the road lanes by putting accreditation signs on the front of their dedicated ‘luxury coaches’.
Thomas Cook said Mr Moore was not an employee and worked for iLUKA, a ticketing company that has formed a partnership with Thomas Cook for the Olympics.

Egypt recalls ambassador from Syria as violence rages

Cairo has recalled its ambassador to Syria as President Bashar al-Assad's forces continue their campaign against opponents of his rule.

No reason for the envoy's recall was given but it came days after the Egyptian foreign minister called for an immediate end to violence.
Other states, both Arab and European, recalled their envoys earlier and also expelled Syrian ambassadors.
A prosecutor and a judge are among the latest victims of the violence.
The government and opposition blamed each other for the deaths of the two men, who were reportedly killed along with their driver as they drove to work in a car in the city of Idlib.
Meanwhile, one of Syria's leading businessmen has told the BBC he believes the country's economy is being crippled by foreign sanctions and the government is slowly disintegrating.
Faisal al-Qudsi, who chairs a London-based investment banking firm, said the security forces were tired but President Assad meant to fight to the end.

Egypt is the latest in a series of Arab countries to withdraw its ambassador from Damascus, in protest at the Syrian government's action against protesters.
The move is part of a growing international isolation of President Assad's government, and deeply symbolic. During the heyday of Arab nationalism, half a century ago, the two countries were briefly unified under the rule of Gamal Abdul Nasser.
The move also reflects popular pressure on the Egyptian government to take a tougher line. There had been a series of demonstrations in Cairo outside the Syrian embassy.
At one point demonstrators even briefly gained access to the building. The protesters and the Muslim Brotherhood, the largest party in parliament, have called on Syria's ambassador to Egypt to be expelled as well, but so far that has not happened.

And speaking to the BBC on Sunday, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague again called on Mr Assad to resign, saying he feared a slide into civil war.

'Until further notice' Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Amr summoned the ambassador to Damascus after it was decided he should remain in Cairo "until further notice", the Egyptian foreign ministry announced.
There was no mention of Syria's ambassador to Cairo being asked to leave.
On Wednesday, Mr Amr said Egypt wanted to see "a real and peaceful change in Syria", starting with an immediate end to violence and with the "government responding to the aspirations of the Syrian people".
This, he said, was necessary to "prevent an overall explosion in the situation, which would have consequences for the stability of the region".
Violence in Syria continued over the weekend, with troops firing on mourners at a funeral in Damascus on Saturday, after it turned into a mass demonstration.
The 11-month uprising against Mr Assad has claimed thousands of lives.
Human rights groups believe more than 7,000 people have been killed while the government says at least 2,000 members of the security forces have died fighting militants.
Activists say government forces are strengthening their siege of the city of Homs, where hundreds of opposition fighters are believed to be holding out.
The BBC's Jim Muir says human rights groups fear a massacre if a full-scale ground assault is launched against the city.
'Stranglehold' Speaking to the BBC, Foreign Secretary Hague the international community's ability to prevent a civil war in Syria had been constrained by Russia and China vetoing the recent UN Security Council draft resolution.
He added that he would meet counterparts in Tunisia on Friday to discuss tightening "the economic and diplomatic stranglehold on the Assad regime".
Mr Assad is pressing on with his plan for a referendum on a new constitution, followed by elections.
However, the opposition has called for a boycott of the 26 February referendum, saying it cannot be held while violence continues.

There is a common dental procedure that nearly every dentist will tell you is completely safe, despite the fact that scientists have been warning of its dangers for more than 100 years.
Every day in the United States alone, 41,000 of these dental procedures are performed on patients who believe they are safely and permanently fixing their problem.
What is this dental procedure?
The root canal.
More than 25 million root canals are performed every year in this country.
Root-canaled teeth are essentially "dead" teeth that can become silent incubators for highly toxic anaerobic bacteria that can, under certain conditions, make their way into your bloodstream to cause a number of serious medical conditions—many not appearing until decades later.
Most of these toxic teeth feel and look fine for many years, which make their role in systemic disease even harder to trace back.
Sadly, the vast majority of dentists are oblivious to the serious potential health risks they are exposing their patients to, risks that persist for the rest of their patients' lives.The American Dental Association claims root canals have been proven safe, but they have NO published data or actual research to substantiate this claim.
Fortunately, I had some early mentors like Dr. Tom Stone and Dr. Douglas Cook, who educated me on this issue nearly 20 years ago. Were it not for a brilliant pioneering dentist who, more than a century ago, made the connection between root-canaled teeth and disease, this underlying cause of disease may have remained hidden to this day. The dentist's name was Weston Price—regarded by many as the greatest dentist of all time.

Weston A. Price: World's Greatest Dentist

Most dentists would be doing an enormous service to public health if they familiarized themselves with the work of Dr. Weston Priceⁱ. Unfortunately, his work continues to be discounted and suppressed by medical and dental professionals alike.
Dr. Price was a dentist and researcher who traveled the world to study the teeth, bones, and diets of native populations living without the "benefit" of modern food. Around the year 1900, Price had been treating persistent root canal infections and became suspicious that root-canaled teeth always remained infected, in spite of treatments. Then one day, he recommended to a woman, wheelchair bound for six years, to have her root canal tooth extracted, even though it appeared to be fine.
She agreed, so he extracted her tooth and then implanted it under the skin of a rabbit. The rabbit amazingly developed the same crippling arthritis as the woman and died from the infection 10 days later. But the woman, now free of the toxic tooth, immediately recovered from her arthritis and could now walk without even the assistance of a cane.
Price discovered that it's mechanically impossible to sterilize a root-canaled (e.g. root-filled) tooth.
He then went on to show that many chronic degenerative diseases originate from root-filled teeth—the most frequent being heart and circulatory diseases. He actually found 16 different causative bacterial agents for these conditions. But there were also strong correlations between root-filled teeth and diseases of the joints, brain and nervous system. Dr. Price went on to write two groundbreaking books in 1922 detailing his research into the link between dental pathology and chronic illness. Unfortunately, his work was deliberately buried for 70 years, until finally one endodontist named George Meinig recognized the importance of Price's work and sought to expose the truth.

Dr. Meinig Advances the Work of Dr. Price

Dr. Meinig, a native of Chicago, was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II before moving to Hollywood to become a dentist for the stars. He eventually became one of the founding members of the American Association of Endodontists (root canal specialists).
In the 1990s, he spent 18 months immersed in Dr. Price's research. In June of 1993, Dr. Meinig published the book Root Canal Cover-Up, which continues to be the most comprehensive reference on this topic today. You can order your copy directly from the Price-Pottenger Foundationⁱⁱ.

What Dentists Don't Know About the Anatomy of Your Teeth

Your teeth are made of the hardest substances in your body.
In the middle of each tooth is the pulp chamber, a soft living inner structure that houses blood vessels and nerves. Surrounding the pulp chamber is the dentin, which is made of living cells that secrete a hard mineral substance. The outermost and hardest layer of your tooth is the white enamel, which encases the dentin.
The roots of each tooth descend into your jawbone and are held in place by the periodontal ligament. In dental school, dentists are taught that each tooth has one to four major canals. However, there are accessory canals that are never mentioned. Literally miles of them!
Just as your body has large blood vessels that branch down into very small capillaries, each of your teeth has a maze of very tiny tubules that, if stretched out, would extend for three miles. Weston Price identified as many as 75 separate accessory canals in a single central incisor (front tooth). Microscopic organisms regularly move in and around these tubules, like gophers in underground tunnels.
When a dentist performs a root canal, he or she hollows out the tooth, then fills the hollow chamber with a substance (called guttapercha), which cuts off the tooth from its blood supply, so fluid can no longer circulate through the tooth. But the maze of tiny tubules remains. And bacteria, cut off from their food supply, hide out in these tunnels where they are remarkably safe from antibiotics and your own body's immune defenses.

The Root Cause of Much Disease

Under the stresses of oxygen and nutrient deprivation, these formerly friendly organisms morph into stronger, more virulent anaerobes that produce a variety of potent toxins. What were once ordinary, friendly oral bacteria mutate into highly toxic pathogens lurking in the tubules of the dead tooth, just awaiting an opportunity to spread.
No amount of sterilization has been found effective in reaching these tubules—and just about every single root-canaled tooth has been found colonized by these bacteria, especially around the apex and in the periodontal ligament. Oftentimes, the infection extends down into the jawbone where it creates cavitations—areas of necrotic tissue in the jawbone itself.
Cavitations are areas of unhealed bone, often accompanied by pockets of infected tissue and gangrene. Sometimes they form after a tooth extraction (such as a wisdom tooth extraction), but they can also follow a root canal. According to Weston Price Foundation, in the records of 5,000 surgical cavitation cleanings, only two were found healed.
And all of this occurs with few, if any, accompanying symptoms. So you may have an abscessed dead tooth and not know it. This focal infection in the immediate area of the root-canaled tooth is bad enough, but the damage doesn't stop there.

Root Canals Can Lead to Heart, Kidney, Bone, and Brain Disease

As long as your immune system remains strong, any bacteria that stray away from the infected tooth are captured and destroyed. But once your immune system is weakened by something like an accident or illness or other trauma, your immune system may be unable to keep the infection in check.
These bacteria can migrate out into surrounding tissues by hitching a ride into your blood stream, where they are transported to new locations to set up camp. The new location can be any organ or gland or tissue.
Dr. Price was able to transfer diseases harbored by humans to rabbits, by implanting fragments of root-canaled teeth, as mentioned above. He found that root canal fragments from a person who had suffered a heart attack, when implanted into a rabbit, would cause a heart attack in the rabbit within a few weeks.
He discovered he could transfer heart disease to the rabbit 100 percent of the time! Other diseases were more than 80 percent transferable by this method. Nearly every chronic degenerative disease has been linked with root canals, including:
Heart disease
Kidney disease
Arthritis, joint, and rheumatic diseases
Neurological diseases (including ALS and MS)
Autoimmune diseases (Lupus and more)
There may also be a cancer connection. Dr. Robert Jones, a researcher of therelationship between root canals and breast cancer, found an extremely high correlation between root canals and breast cancer.^iv He claims to have found the following correlations in a five-year study of 300 breast cancer cases:
93 percent of women with breast cancer had root canals
7 percent had other oral pathology
Tumors, in the majority of cases, occurred on the same side of the body as the root canal(s) or other oral pathology
Dr. Jones claims that toxins from the bacteria in an infected tooth or jawbone are able to inhibit the proteins that suppress tumor development. A German physician reported similar findings. Dr. Josef Issels reported that, in his 40 years of treating "terminal" cancer patients, 97 percent of his cancer patients had root canals. If these physicians are correct, the cure for cancer may be as simple as having a tooth pulled, then rebuilding your immune system.

Good Bugs Gone Bad

How are these mutant oral bacteria connected with heart disease or arthritis? The ADA and the AAE claim it's a "myth" that the bacteria found in and around root-canaled teeth can cause disease^v. But they base that on the misguided assumption that the bacteria in these diseased teeth are the SAME as normal bacteria in your mouth—and that's clearly not the case.
Today, bacteria can be identified using DNA analysis, whether they're dead or alive, from their telltale DNA signatures.
In a continuation of Dr. Price's work, the Toxic Element Research Foundation (TERF) used DNA analysis to examine root-canaled teeth, and they found bacterial contamination in 100 percent of the samples tested. They identified 42 different species of anaerobic bacteria in 43 root canal samples. In cavitations, 67 different bacteria were identified among the 85 samples tested, with individual samples housing between 19 to 53 types of bacteria each. The bacteria they found included the following types:
Capnocytophagaochracea^vi
Fusobacteriumnucleatum^vii
Gemellamorbillorum ^viii
Leptotrichiabuccalis
Porphyromonasgingivalis ^ix
Are these just benign, ordinary mouth bugs? Absolutely not. Four can affect your heart, three can affect your nerves, two can affect your kidneys, two can affect your brain, and one can infect your sinus cavities… so they are anything BUT friendly! Approximately 400 percent more bacteria were found in the blood surrounding the root canal tooth than were found in the tooth itself, suggesting the tooth is the incubatorand the periodontal ligament is the food supply. The bone surrounding root-canaled teeth was found even HIGHER in bacterial count… not surprising, since bone is virtual buffet of bacterial nutrients.

Since When is Leaving A Dead Body Part IN Your Body a Good Idea?

There is no other medical procedure that involves allowing a dead body part to remain in your body. When your appendix dies, it's removed. If you get frostbite or gangrene on a finger or toe, it is amputated. If a baby dies in utero, the body typically initiates a miscarriage.
Your immune system doesn't care for dead substances, and just the presence of dead tissue can cause your system to launch an attack, which is another reason to avoid root canals—they leave behind a dead tooth.
Infection, plus the autoimmune rejection reaction, causes more bacteria to collect around the dead tissue. In the case of a root canal, bacteria are given the opportunity to flush into your blood stream every time you bite down.

Why Dentists Cling to the Belief Root Canals are Safe

The ADA rejects Dr. Price's evidence, claiming root canals are safe, yet they offer no published data or actual research to substantiate their claim. American Heart Association recommends a dose of antibiotics before many routine dental procedures to prevent infective endocarditis (IE) if you have certain heart conditions that predispose you to this type of infection.
So, on the one hand, the ADA acknowledges oral bacteria can make their way from your mouth to your heart and cause a life-threatening infection.
But at the same time, the industry vehemently denies any possibility that these same bacteria—toxic strains KNOWN to be pathogenic to humans—can hide out in your dead root-canaled tooth to be released into your blood stream every time you chew, where they can damage your health in a multitude of ways.
Is this really that large of a leap? Could there be another reason so many dentists, as well as the ADA and the AAE, refuse to admit root canals are dangerous? Well, yes, as a matter of fact, there is. Root canals are the most profitable procedure in dentistry.^x

What You Need to Know to AVOID a Root Canal

I strongly recommend never getting a root canal. Risking your health to preserve a tooth simply doesn't make sense. Unfortunately, there are many people who've already have one. If you have, you should seriously consider having the tooth removed, even if it looks and feels fine. Remember, as soon as your immune system is compromised, your risk of of developing a serious medical problem increases—and assaults on your immune system are far too frequent in today's world.
If you have a tooth removed, there are a few options available to you.
Partial denture: This is a removable denture, often just called a "partial." It's the simplest and least expensive option.
Bridge: This is a more permanent fixture resembling a real tooth but is a bit more involved and expensive to build.
Implant: This is a permanent artificial tooth, typically titanium, implanted in your gums and jaw. There are some problems with these due to reactions to the metals used. Zirconium is a newer implant material that shows promise for fewer complications.
But just pulling the tooth and inserting some sort of artificial replacement isn't enough.
Dentists are taught to remove the tooth but leave your periodontal ligament. But as you now know, this ligament can serve as a breeding ground for deadly bacteria. Most experts who've studied this recommend removing the ligament, along with one millimeter of the bony socket, in order to drastically reduce your risk of developing an infection from the bacterially infected tissues left behind.
I strongly recommend consulting a biological dentist because they are uniquely trained to do these extractions properly and safely, as well as being adept at removing mercury fillings, if necessary. Their approach to dental care is far more holistic and considers the impact on your entire body—not JUST your mouth.

Having quieted off as of lately -- this volcano usually shows spectacular eruptions on a daily or semi-daily basis.

Again , we see a large eruption of lava , ash , and rock. The slope of the mountain has built up hundreds of feet this past year... and continues to do so.. Also the second plume of steam coming from the back side of the mountain continues (2nd vent forming possibly?)

Syria crisis: Deadly shooting at Damascus funeral

Syrian troops have fired on mourners during a funeral that turned into a demonstration in Damascus, killing at least one person, activists say.

The shooting occurred at a funeral for people killed during a protest against President Bashar al-Assad on Friday.
The violence comes during a visit by a Chinese envoy, who urged dialogue in a bid to defuse the 11-month crisis.
State TV quoted him as saying he backed government plans for a referendum on a new constitution followed by elections.
The opposition has called for a boycott of the 26 February referendum, saying it cannot be held as violence continues.
Appeal for calm Activists say there was a huge turnout for Saturday's funeral in the Mezzeh district on the western edge of Damascus. Mourners were burying three youths shot dead during protests following Friday prayers.
The funeral procession turned into one of the biggest demonstrations the capital has seen, with thousands of people chanting slogans calling for an end to the Assad regime.
According to activists, security forces opened fire, killing at least one protester and injuring several others.

Zhai Jun said that "a nation cannot develop without stability"

Despite the current crackdown, there were similar protests after Friday prayers in many parts of the country.
Opposition activists say government forces on Saturday renewed their bombardment of the restive central city of Homs.
The violence came after Chinese envoy Zhai Jun held talks with President Assad in Damascus.
Syrian TV quoted Mr Zhai as saying: "The position of China is to call on the government, the opposition and the rebels to halt acts of violence immediately.
"We hope that the referendum on a new constitution as well as the forthcoming parliamentary elections pass off calmly."
After the meeting, Mr Assad was quoted as saying: "What Syria is facing is fundamentally an effort to divide it and affect its geopolitical place and historic role in the region."
China was one of the nations that voted against a recent UN General Assembly resolution calling on Mr Assad to stop his 11-month crackdown on dissent and step down.
Beijing, along with Moscow, has insisted outsiders cannot force regime change in Syria.
'Torture' Opposition activists said government forces were continuing their two-week rocket and artillery attack on the opposition stronghold of Baba Amr in Homs on Saturday.
Activist Mohammad al-Homsi told Reuters news agency: "Troops have closed in on Baba Amr and the bombardment is mad, but I don't know if they are willing to storm the neighbourhood while it is snowing.
"There is no electricity and communications between districts are cut, so we are unable to get a death toll."
The BBC's Jim Muir in neighbouring Lebanon says the Syrian government clearly wants to quell all armed resistance and seal its borders to prevent supplies to the opposition.
Meanwhile the human rights group Amnesty International said it had obtained new evidence of torture being used by Syrian forces against opponents.
Amnesty researcher Neil Sammonds said one man told him that part of his hand was blown off with explosives after he refused to pray to a photograph of President Assad.
Other Syrians at a camp in Jordan said detainees were subjected to protracted beatings. One prisoner said he had been forced to witness the rape of another male detainee.
Syria restricts access to foreign media and it is often not possible to verify some reports and casualty figures.

Just my personal opinion sais "No" to a Tunguska-like event. I will explain why I say so : The recent Russian explosions had ONLY LIGHT and no sounds, while the Tunguska-explosion was accompagnied by a shockwave and 'super boom'-sound, and the area around it was devastated burned and destroyed ... NON OF THAT happened lately in Russia, Portugal and Fortworth, but in Japan where symilar lights were seen it was accompagnied with EQ's, and in China where such kind of light happend there disappeared a whole village ...

The three bungling Iranian bombers detained in Bangkok after they accidentally set off their explosives cavorted with prostitutes at a beach resort days before the botched attacks.
A photograph has emerged of the trio cosying up to sex workers, surrounded by hookah-pipes and drinks, in a bar in the notoriously sleazy city of Pattaya.
The revelation comes as it emerged police are now hunting for two more suspects, including a possible bomb expert, they think helped the trio as they set about targeting Israeli diplomats.

The foiled plan was discovered on Tuesday when explosives in the men's rented house blew up by mistake, forcing them to flee.

After flying into the southern city of Phuket on February 8, the men moved to Pattaya, 45 miles southeast of the capital, and stayed there for at least two nights before heading to Bangkok.

Abdulaziz al-Hijji, 38, works for the European branch of Saudi Aramco and lives in a posh central London flat, having left his US home in Florida just weeks before the horrific attacks on September 11, 2001.
Registration numbers of vehicles passing through a checkpoint at the Prestancia gated community in Sarasota, in the months before 9/11, and the identifications shown by drivers, suggest three of the terrorists had visited al-Hijji's home.

The FBI also ruled out a connection between al-Hijji and the hijackers or the 9/11 plot but former US senator, Bob Graham - who chaired the US Senate intelligence committee at the time - said he has seen two secret documents which cast doubt on the FBI's claim.

He told The Daily Telegraph: 'Both documents indicate that the investigation was not the robust inquiry claimed by the FBI.'

The al-Hijjis are said to have aroused suspicion because of the 'manner and timing' of their departure from the US, having left behind a number of personal possessions, including three cars.

Al-Hijjis works for the Aramco Overseas Company UK Limited, based in New Oxford Street, London.

Eisenhower Met With ETs Says Ex-Government Consultant

It's a story that has circulated in and out of the UFO community for years: Did former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower have three meetings with extraterrestrials?

An ex-government consultant says the story is true that the 34th commander in chief chatted, if you will, with aliens at a New Mexico air base, according to reports.

No definitive proof has ever surfaced to confirm this president-meets-aliens tale. However, according to Timothy Good, Eisenhower and FBI officials arranged for the out-of-this-world summit at Holloman Air Force Base.

"Aliens have made both formal and informal contact with thousands of people throughout the world from all walks of life," Good, an author, lecturer and former consultant to Congress and the Pentagon, said on Frank Skinner's BBC2 program, "Opinionated."

Good claims that governments of the world have had ongoing contacts with ETs over many years.

The story about Eisenhower's close encounter of the very personal kind -- where he reportedly met with Nordic-looking aliens -- supposedly unfolded while the president was vacationing in Palm Springs, Calif., in February 1954.

Whether you believe this story or not, an interesting related side-story reared its head in 2010. A retired New Hampshire state representative, Henry McElroy Jr., taped an intriguing video announcement in which he revealed seeing a secret briefing document intended for Eisenhower.

This document, according to McElroy, contained information that aliens were in America and that Eisenhower could meet with them.

"To the best of my memory, this brief was pervaded with a sense of hope, and it informed President Eisenhower of the continued presence of extraterrestrial beings here in the United States of America," McElroy said on the video.

"The tone of the brief indicated to me that there was no need for concern, since these visitors were in no way causing any harm or had any intentions whatsoever of causing any disruption then or in the future," he explained.

McElroy goes on to say that, although he couldn't verify times or places where any meetings might have taken place between Eisenhower and "off-world astronauts," he believed that there were such meetings.

While it's certainly difficult to prove any of these things, we're left with the same question that always follows such stories: Who do you believe?

Many people across the Upstate called FOX Carolina and said they were awakened by a loud boom and flash of light early Monday morning.

Most of the reports of the unusual phenomenon came from people living in Cherokee, Spartanburg and Greenville counties at about 1:45 a.m.

Officials at the National Weather Service at the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport said that based on eyewitness reports, the event was likely a meteor.

The Weather Service said there was a flash in the sky about 1:46 a.m. and they recorded a very faint flash with their cameras.

Spartanburg police told the Weather Service that they had received numerous calls from the public. They said that one of their officers said they saw a flash light up their car and saw various pieces disintegrate in the sky.

Greenville resident Joseph Fidler sent security camera video from his home showing a bright light illuminating his neighborhood and a reflection of the meteor in the windshield of his car below.

Stuart McDaniel, of Lawndale, NC, sent in video to FOX Carolina that shows a large fireball streaking across the lower horizon at about the same time as the meteor was reported in the Upstate.

Dr. Scott Howard, a geologist with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, said the chances of finding a meteorite are very slim. He said only six have ever been found in South Carolina, three of which were found in the Upstate.

Howard said objects coming into the atmosphere, known as meteors, are common and are usually called shooting stars. He said if something hits the ground, it is then called a meteorite.

Al-Qaeda leader backs Syrian revolt against President Assad

Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri urges Syrians not to rely on the West or Arab governments in their uprising to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

In the eight-minute video, entitled Onwards, Lions of Syria and posted on an Islamist website, the Egyptian-born Zawahri also urged Muslims in Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan to come to the aid of Syrian rebels confronting Assad's forces.

"Our people in Syria, don't rely on the West or the United States or Arab governments and Turkey," Mr Zawahri said.

"If we want freedom, we must be liberated from this regime. If we want justice, we must retaliate against this regime."

Mr Zawahri took command of al Qaeda after Osama bin Laden was killed by US special forces in a raid in Pakistan last May.

This is believed to be his second such message to Syrian protesters.

In July, Mr Zawahri urged Syrian protesters to direct their movement also against Washington and Israel, denouncing the United States as insincere in showing solidarity with them.

At the plateau's southeastern edge lies the spectacular Aristarchus Crater, an impact crater 40 kilometers wide and 3 kilometers deep. Scan along this remarkable panorama and you will find yourself gazing directly at the crater's west wall for some 25 kilometers. Features along the terraced wall include dark impact melt and debris deposits, bright excavated material, and boulders over 100 meters wide. At a full resolution of 1.6 meters per pixel, the sharp mosaic was created from images recorded by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's narrow angle camera in November of 2011. The orbiter's vantage point was 70 kilometers east of the crater's center and only 26 kilometers above the lunar surface.
Another teaser from NASA posted on APOD today, they show the West Wall of Aristarchus Crater on the Moon, however further inspection reveals the so called crater actualy resembles an open cast mine and with the evidence provided by NASA it's hard to imagine 40 kilometer wide hole with its strange stepped sides could possibly have been made by a meteor? They even mention "excavated material," deliberate tease?

A bleak Ghazni Province seems to offer little, but a Pentagon study says it may have among the world’s largest deposits of lithium.

WASHINGTON — The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials.

The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.
An internal Pentagon memo, for example, states that Afghanistan could become the “Saudi Arabia of lithium,” a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and BlackBerrys.
The vast scale of Afghanistan’s mineral wealth was discovered by a small team of Pentagon officials and American geologists. The Afghan government and President Hamid Karzai were recently briefed, American officials said.
While it could take many years to develop a mining industry, the potential is so great that officials and executives in the industry believe it could attract heavy investment even before mines are profitable, providing the possibility of jobs that could distract from generations of war.
“There is stunning potential here,” Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of the United States Central Command, said in an interview on Saturday. “There are a lot of ifs, of course, but I think potentially it is hugely significant.”
The value of the newly discovered mineral deposits dwarfs the size of Afghanistan’s existing war-bedraggled economy, which is based largely on opium production and narcotics trafficking as well as aid from the United States and other industrialized countries. Afghanistan’s gross domestic product is only about $12 billion.
“This will become the backbone of the Afghan economy,” said Jalil Jumriany, an adviser to the Afghan minister of mines.
American and Afghan officials agreed to discuss the mineral discoveries at a difficult moment in the war in Afghanistan. The American-led offensive in Marja in southern Afghanistan has achieved only limited gains. Meanwhile, charges of corruption and favoritism continue to plague the Karzai government, and Mr. Karzai seems increasingly embittered toward the White House.
So the Obama administration is hungry for some positive news to come out of Afghanistan. Yet the American officials also recognize that the mineral discoveries will almost certainly have a double-edged impact.
Instead of bringing peace, the newfound mineral wealth could lead the Taliban to battle even more fiercely to regain control of the country.
The corruption that is already rampant in the Karzai government could also be amplified by the new wealth, particularly if a handful of well-connected oligarchs, some with personal ties to the president, gain control of the resources. Just last year, Afghanistan’s minister of mines was accused by American officials of accepting a $30 million bribe to award China the rights to develop its copper mine. The minister has since been replaced.
Endless fights could erupt between the central government in Kabul and provincial and tribal leaders in mineral-rich districts. Afghanistan has a national mining law, written with the help of advisers from the World Bank, but it has never faced a serious challenge.
“No one has tested that law; no one knows how it will stand up in a fight between the central government and the provinces,” observed Paul A. Brinkley, deputy undersecretary of defense for business and leader of the Pentagon team that discovered the deposits.
At the same time, American officials fear resource-hungry China will try to dominate the development of Afghanistan’s mineral wealth, which could upset the United States, given its heavy investment in the region. After winning the bid for its Aynak copper mine in Logar Province, China clearly wants more, American officials said.
Another complication is that because Afghanistan has never had much heavy industry before, it has little or no history of environmental protection either. “The big question is, can this be developed in a responsible way, in a way that is environmentally and socially responsible?” Mr. Brinkley said. “No one knows how this will work.”
With virtually no mining industry or infrastructure in place today, it will take decades for Afghanistan to exploit its mineral wealth fully. “This is a country that has no mining culture,” said Jack Medlin, a geologist in the United States Geological Survey’s international affairs program. “They’ve had some small artisanal mines, but now there could be some very, very large mines that will require more than just a gold pan.”
The mineral deposits are scattered throughout the country, including in the southern and eastern regions along the border with Pakistan that have had some of the most intense combat in the American-led war against the Taliban insurgency.
The Pentagon task force has already started trying to help the Afghans set up a system to deal with mineral development. International accounting firms that have expertise in mining contracts have been hired to consult with the Afghan Ministry of Mines, and technical data is being prepared to turn over to multinational mining companies and other potential foreign investors. The Pentagon is helping Afghan officials arrange to start seeking bids on mineral rights by next fall, officials said.
“The Ministry of Mines is not ready to handle this,” Mr. Brinkley said. “We are trying to help them get ready.”
Like much of the recent history of the country, the story of the discovery of Afghanistan’s mineral wealth is one of missed opportunities and the distractions of war.
In 2004, American geologists, sent to Afghanistan as part of a broader reconstruction effort, stumbled across an intriguing series of old charts and data at the library of the Afghan Geological Survey in Kabul that hinted at major mineral deposits in the country. They soon learned that the data had been collected by Soviet mining experts during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s, but cast aside when the Soviets withdrew in 1989.
During the chaos of the 1990s, when Afghanistan was mired in civil war and later ruled by the Taliban, a small group of Afghan geologists protected the charts by taking them home, and returned them to the Geological Survey’s library only after the American invasion and the ouster of the Taliban in 2001.
“There were maps, but the development did not take place, because you had 30 to 35 years of war,” said Ahmad Hujabre, an Afghan engineer who worked for the Ministry of Mines in the 1970s.
Armed with the old Russian charts, the United States Geological Survey began a series of aerial surveys of Afghanistan’s mineral resources in 2006, using advanced gravity and magnetic measuring equipment attached to an old Navy Orion P-3 aircraft that flew over about 70 percent of the country.
The data from those flights was so promising that in 2007, the geologists returned for an even more sophisticated study, using an old British bomber equipped with instruments that offered a three-dimensional profile of mineral deposits below the earth’s surface. It was the most comprehensive geologic survey of Afghanistan ever conducted.
The handful of American geologists who pored over the new data said the results were astonishing.
But the results gathered dust for two more years, ignored by officials in both the American and Afghan governments. In 2009, a Pentagon task force that had created business development programs in Iraq was transferred to Afghanistan, and came upon the geological data. Until then, no one besides the geologists had bothered to look at the information — and no one had sought to translate the technical data to measure the potential economic value of the mineral deposits.
Soon, the Pentagon business development task force brought in teams of American mining experts to validate the survey’s findings, and then briefed Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Mr. Karzai.
So far, the biggest mineral deposits discovered are of iron and copper, and the quantities are large enough to make Afghanistan a major world producer of both, United States officials said. Other finds include large deposits of niobium, a soft metal used in producing superconducting steel, rare earth elements and large gold deposits in Pashtun areas of southern Afghanistan.
Just this month, American geologists working with the Pentagon team have been conducting ground surveys on dry salt lakes in western Afghanistan where they believe there are large deposits of lithium. Pentagon officials said that their initial analysis at one location in Ghazni Province showed the potential for lithium deposits as large of those of Bolivia, which now has the world’s largest known lithium reserves.
For the geologists who are now scouring some of the most remote stretches of Afghanistan to complete the technical studies necessary before the international bidding process is begun, there is a growing sense that they are in the midst of one of the great discoveries of their careers.
“On the ground, it’s very, very, promising,” Mr. Medlin said. “Actually, it’s pretty amazing.”

Europe Hammered by Winter, Is North America Next?

Feb 16, 2012: For the first half of this year's winter, the big news was warm temperatures and lack of snow. Ski resorts were covered in bare dirt, while January temperatures in southern California topped July highs.
Then, out of the blue, Europe got clobbered: Over the past two weeks, temperatures in Eastern Europe have nose-dived to -30 degrees Celsius (-22 degrees Fahrenheit). Blizzards and the bone-chilling cold have resulted in the deaths of over 550 people so far, with rooftop-high snow drifts trapping tens of thousands of villagers in their homes and cutting off access to entire towns. It has even snowed as far south as North Africa.

NASA climatologist Bill Patzert of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory explains what happened: "A couple of weeks ago, Mother Nature did an about face. The tight polar vortex that had bottled up the cold arctic air in the beginning of winter suddenly weakened. Cold air swept out of Siberia and invaded Europe and the Far East."
The "tight polar vortex" is caused by the Arctic Oscillation (AO), a see-sawing pressure difference between the Arctic and lower latitudes. When the pressure difference is high, a whirlpool of air forms around the North Pole. That’s what happened earlier this winter: the whirlpool was more forceful, corralling the cold air and keeping it nearer the pole.

Now the vortex is weakening. With "the AO Index going negative," as an expert or weather-nerd might put it, cold air escapes from that whirlpool and heads southward, resulting in the killing extremes now plaguing the other half of the planet.
However, even the breakdown of the vortex cannot completely account for the severity of the winter Europe is suddenly experiencing. As strange as it sounds, some climatologists, among them Judah Cohen of Atmospheric and Environmental Research in Massachusetts, attribute the unusual cold to global warming. Cohen contends that since sea ice is being melted by warmer temperatures in the Arctic, more moisture is available for the atmosphere to pick up – and drop as snow. As a result, Siberian snow cover has increased, and this snow cover has a cooling effect which reaches East Asia and Europe.
"Cohen's research is cutting edge and could bring important improvements to forecasting climate and weather over North America and Europe," says Patzert. "Cohen and others are on the threshold of understanding of how climate change affects the behavior of the Arctic Oscillation¹."
Patzert adds, however, that this winter is just one of many severe winters that have changed European history. "Looking back, Mother Nature has taken us on some very wild rides."
He cites the winter of 1683/84, when the Thames River in England stayed frozen with a thick layer of ice for nearly two months, as an example.

Patzert notes that European history would have been much different if Napoleon had had a good meteorologist on his staff and some NASA satellites to warn him about what he was marching into.
"And the turning point of World War II occurred in 1941, when Germany’s forces were nearly frozen in place," he adds.
There are many other examples², and climate change can't be blamed for all of them.
"There's always going to be some natural variability. Every episode of high temperatures or extreme cold isn't climate change. Sometimes it's just weather!"
The weakening Arctic Oscillation could soon bring a return of winter to North America as well, although Patzert doesn't expect it to be as severe as what's happening on the other side of the Atlantic.
Is there any relief in sight for Europe?
"The good news is that this crippling cold snap arrived mid-winter. With the vernal equinox less than six weeks away, this AO episode will become muted – hopefully."

There has been some speculation that the display was caused by a CME, launched from the sun on Feb. 10th and reaching Earth on Feb. 14th. However, there is no clear signature of a CME impact in local solar wind data.

Update: Geomagnetic activity intensified even more on Feb. 15th when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) near Earth tilted south, opening a crack in Earth's magnetic field. Solar wind poured in and fueled a G1-class geomagnetic storm, now subsiding."

Iran cutting oil export to six European states ‎

In response to the latest sanctions imposed by the EU against Iran's energy and banking sectors, the Islamic Republic says it is cutting oil exports to six European countries.

Iran on Wednesday said it's cutting oil exports to six European countries including Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Portugal.

Iran says it will only sell oil to those European companies that agree to strike long-term agreements and guarantee payment.

Honduras prison fire kills hundreds

At least 300 prisoners have been killed after a massive fire swept through a jail in Honduras, officials say.

Many victims were burned or suffocated to death in their cells in Comayagua, north of the capital Tegucigalpa.
The officials say at least 300 are confirmed dead, but a further 56 inmates, out of the 853 in the prison, are missing and presumed dead.
Relatives of prisoners clashed with police as they tried to force their way into the prison, desperate for news.
Police responded by firing shots into the air and tear gas.
An inquiry is under way whether the blaze was caused by rioting or an electrical fault.
Honduran President Lobo pledged a "full and transparent" investigation into the "lamentable and unacceptable" tragedy.
He said local and national prison authorities would be suspended while the inquiry was conducted.

'Hellish' scenes The fire broke out late on Tuesday night and took more than an hour to be brought under control.
Dozens of prisoners died trapped in their cells and were burned beyond recognition.

Fire survivor: 'We had to break on to the roof to be able to get out'

Comayagua firefighters' spokesman Josue Garcia said there were "hellish" scenes at the prison and that desperate inmates had rioted in a bid to escape the flames.
"We couldn't get them out because we didn't have the keys and couldn't find the guards who had them," he said.
One prisoner, who managed to escape, later told reporters that he first had heard "the screams of the ones (inmates) on fire and everyone just started fearing for their lives".
"The only thing that we were able to do was start breaking the roof apart so we could go out from above. We started ripping apart the ceiling above us."
Lucy Marder, who heads the forensic services in Comayagua, said that 356 people on the prison roster were unaccounted for.

"The majority could be dead, though others could have suffered burns, escaped or survived," Ms Marder said.

It was feared many inmates had fled the prison in Comayagua, about 100km (60 miles) north of the capital Tegucigalpa.
Amid the confusion, relatives gathered outside the prison to try to get information.
"I'm looking for my brother. We don't know what's happened to him and they won't let us in," Arlen Gomez told Honduran radio.
Local hospitals are treating dozens of people for burns and other injuries.

Authorities have yet to establish a cause of the fire

Some of the injured have been taken to Tegucigalpa for treatment, among them 30 people with severe burns.
Firefighters said they had struggled to enter the prison because shots had been fired.
Honduran media reported that there had been a riot in the prison before the fire broke out.
Prison service head Daniel Orellana denied this.
"We have two hypotheses. One is that a prisoner set fire to a mattress and the other one is that there was a short-circuit in the electrical system," he was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Prisons in Honduras, which has the world's highest murder rate, are often seriously overcrowded and hold many gang members.
